Before you read this Mackeeper Review, I want to assure you that I’ve bought Mackeeper myself and used it for an extended period of time, and the reason I bought it was how to make mac fast again. This review is based on my experience with Mackeeper and in this review, I’ll show you how Mackeeper can save you hundreds of dollars and actually make your Mac much more faster and cleaner. Mackeeper consists 18 different utilities and these utilities are worth more than $500 if you buy them individually. Just for an example, Mackeeper can remove nasty adware files from your Mac and if you buy a adware software separately, that would alone cost nearly $100 while a full license of Mackeeper costs as little as $5 per month. This is not a false claim and anybody having two eyes can understand what I’m saying.
If that doesn’t get it all, try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac, which is AdwareMedic utility that scans your Mac for known adware. Run a scan and check the boxes by anything you want to delete. Not Protected status means the license is not assigned to a Mac, you are not logged in to MacKeeper, or MacKeeper isn’t installed. How to transfer (reassign) your MacKeeper license Hover your pointer over the My Preferences button next to the license you would like to manage. Remove MacKeeper from the Mac menu bar. If you click on the MacKeeper menu in Mac’s menu bar you won’t find a Quit command, which might lead you to believe that it can’t be quiet. Force-quitting doesn’t seem to work either. To remove the MacKeeper icon from the menu bar: Launch the MacKeeper app in the Applications folder.

Mackeeper is a very powerful as well as useful utility for your Mac, especially if you want to learn how to make Mac fast again. Mackeeper can recover deleted files as well as protect your computer from harmful Viruses and Trojans. Mackeeper can protect your computer from malicious Mac viruses and it is rated as #1 antivirus software for Mac. You can use Mackeeper on your Intel or PowerPC Mac and it also works perfectly with Mac High Sierra. Mackeeper is completely safe and when it is running, you won’t notice even a very slight impact on your Mac’s performance. I’m breaking down this review in various sub-headings and also including latest screenshots so that you can see actually what’s up with Mackeeper.
Installation of Mackeeper
Installing Mackeeper is very straightforward and you don’t need to sweat at all to get the software up and running. When you download the software, you’ll get a small installer file (approx. 370 KB) and once you run that file, actual installer file of Mackeeper will be downloaded directly from MacKeepers servers and installation wizard is fully automated. Here are the screenshots from the installation wizard :
After installing, Mackeeper will automatically add itself to applications as well as you can run it from your Mac’s desktop. It shows up as a Bodybuilder’s icon on desktop. Now I’ll tell you more about each and every aspect of the software, what it does and you can see If its features are exactly what you are looking for. Mackeeper consists 16 different very useful utilities and I’m describing all of these utilities one by one. If you’ve any questions about anything, feel free to post a comment here and I’ll personally respond to that. I’ve actually bought Mackeeper and here is the activation screen I got :Please note that Internet Security and Anti-Theft features of Mackeeper are not installed by default. You need to install both these modules by clicking a button in Mackeeper and it doesn’t cost anything additional. Installing Antivirus and Anti-Theft is not essential and you can use Mackeeper without installing both modules. However, both modules are very useful and we highly recommend installing them so that you can protect your Mac from viruses.
1. Internet Security
Internet Security is probably the most needed feature of Mac. Last year, a fake antivirus product had attacked lots of Mac computers and Mackeeper’s antivirus engine can block those attacks easily. This module of Mackeeper blocks malicious websites automatically and protects hackers and spammers from taking control over your Mac. Mackkeeper uses several databases to keep track of known bad websites and when you are browsing the web using Safari (or any other web browser) and visit a malicious website coincidentally, Mackeeper blocks the malicious website from opening and thus saves your Mac from any harmful activities.
If you want to block certain websites on your Mac, you need to compile a list of websites you want to block and simply paste the list inside Mackeeper so that those websites are not accessible anymore.
2. Anti-Theft
Your actually never know when your Mac can get stolen especially If you leave your Mac inside your car or travel frequently in buses or trains. Mackeeper’s Anti-Theft feature is very useful in this regard. You might be wondering about how it works and here it is :
A) First of all, when you install Mackeeper, you need to make sure that Anti-Theft is installed in Mackeeper and you’ve actually activated this feature.
B) If your Mac gets stolen, you need to Log In into your Mackeeper account online, navigate to Anti-Theft and hit a button named Mac Was Stolen.
C) As soon as the thief runs your Mac and goes online, Mackeeper will automatically take a Snapshot of the thief and his location as well as the Internet Connection he is using. You can use this report to locate the thief or hand over this information to police for further investigation. What else can be better than having a Snapshot of the thief?
3. Data Encryptor
If you share your Mac with someone or your want to protect some files on mac so that nobody can view them, Data Encryptor is a wonderful utility to protect your private files and folders so that nobody else can have access to them. For instance, If you’ve saved your banking passwords, credit card information and other vital information on your Mac, you surely want to protect it so that nobody else can view those. Data Encryptor makes your files invisible on your Mac and nobody can find them even by using Finder or Terminal.
To use Data Encryptor, first you need to create a password for Data Encrypter module in Mackeeper. After creating a password for the Data Encryptor, you need to drag and drop the files or folders you want to protect in Data Encryptor’s work area. You can also use Add button to add files/folders you want to make invisible. You can also use AES-128 or AES-256 bit encryption to make this more secure. Create a password and click Hide button. The lock will close and the files will not be visible to anyone.
Next time, when you want to see those hidden files and folders again, you’ll need to Log In into Mackeeper’s Data Encryption module and unlock the folders you had locked. That’s it!
4. File Recovery
The name says everything itself! If you’ve accidentally deleted files from your Mac and even emptied the trash, you can still recover those files on mac using File Recovery module of Mackeeper. Data Recovery products alone cost way more than Mackeeper’s total price!
In Mackeeper, click on File Recovery option, select the partition where your files were located before deletion. Now click “Start Scan” button. Mackeeper file show you a list of files you can recover.
You can also recover deleted files from USB Hard Drivers, Pen Drivers, Memory cards and the list goes on. Please keep in mind that recovering deleted files on Mac also depends on how long ago those files were deleted from the Trash Bin. If the files were deleted a long time ago (say A Month) then It is somewhat likely that those files are now overwritten by another files and thus the recovery option won’t be able to retrieve those files anymore. If you’re looking to recover the files you’ve just deleted (or a few days before), you can be almost certain that File Recovery option will easily recover those deleted files for you.
5. Backup
You can use this module to create reserve copies of your important files and folders to a USB Flash Drive, a External hard disk or FTP. This utility is specially useful If you have some important documents you frequently edit and you want to make sure that you’ve backups of them in case something happens.
To use this module, all you need to do is, drag the files you want to backup in Mackeeper’s Backup module and select If you want to backup the document manually or automatically. You can also select the default backup location and the three most recent back ups of the file will be reserved automatically on the scheduled time.
6. Shredder
Shredder is a very powerful utility to delete your files permanently so that even specialized recovery software can not recover those files again. For example, say you are selling your old Mac computer to someone and you want to delete the files beyond recovery, then this tool is the perfect one. You can also use it to delete files which you don’t want anyone to recover anyhow from your Mac.
If you simply delete the files from your Mac and put them into trash and empty the trash, please be aware that those files are not actually gone. They can still be recovered by using a specialized data recovery software. To delete files beyond recovery, just drag and drop the files you want to delete permanently into Mackeeper’s Shredder work area. Click “Shred“ button and that’s it.
Please keep in mind that this operation is irreversible so think several times before shredding a document as you won’t be able to recover it later by any means.
7. Fast Cleanup (the best tool for how to make Mac fast again)
Fast Cleanup is a very useful tool to free up some hard disk space on your Mac and make mac fast again. Although disk space is hardly a problem these days but in case you need to free up some additional hard disk space, you can use this utility. This feature includes 4 different drive cleanup utilities :
A) Binaries cutter
This removed unneeded parts of applications without harming their functionality.
B) Languages cutter
This removes unused language files from applications.
C) Logs cleaner
Removes log files which are not actually useful for a Mac user and not essential to run Mac.
D) Cache cleaner.
Removes cached files by the system.
You can enable or disable any cleaner module by dragging a slider. If disk space is not a problem for you, this feature is not very useful.
8. Duplicates Finder
This module of Mackeeper will search the entire hard drive to locate multiple instances of same files which are taking up the disk space. You can decide If you want to keep the duplicate items or simply remove them from your Mac. You need to click “Duplicate Finder” and then scan the Mac for identical files.
You can also find the duplicates in a particular folder. For example, you have a “Photos” folder and you want to find duplicate photos in that folders. You can simply select that folder and find duplicate files automatically. Duplicate finder can find the duplicate files even If you’ve renamed them. You can also add folders you want to ignore during scanning. Make sure that you review the duplicate items carefully before you remove them.
9. Files Finder
Files Finder is similar to searching files on your Mac using finder. File Finder utility of Mackeeper allows user to view only the select files types like videos, music or other. You can create your own preset custom filters to find the files that matches a certain criteria. You can also add more filter options to find the files quickly and easily.
10. Disk Usage
Disk usage tool scans all the folders and marks them with different colors depending on the file size. For example, If you don’t know which files are taking so large space of your hard disk, you can use this utility to determine the disk usage.
Files less than 1 MB are marked green.
Files more than 1MB but less than 1 GB are Yellow.
Files between 1 and 10 gigabytes are Orange
All larger than 10 Gigabyes are Red.
You can adjust the colors and file sizes according to your desire in preferences. You can also delete the files if you want to or locate them in Finder and move them to any other volume on your hard disk. This tool is very useful to locate the larger files which might be deep inside your documents and you don’t exactly remember their location. You can use this tool to locate those files and actually remove them If you don’t need them anymore.
11. Smart Uninstaller
Free Mackeeper For Mac
Smart Uninstaller is a very useful utility of Mackeeper to remove widgets, applications, preference panes and plugins. To start using this you need to click on Mackeeper’s Preferences. Now click the “Advanced“ tab and check “Show System Applications in Smart Uninstaller“.
Now select “Smart Un-installer” and click on “Scan“ button to see all the installed apps. The benefits of Smart Uninstaller is, It fully removes the applications and all the associated files completely. It doesn’t leave anything behind and thus saves disk space.
There is also a section called “LeftOvers“. This section shows remnants of applications which you un-installed previously. It means that If you un-installed an application even before installing Mackeeper and there are left overs, Mackeeper will detect them and show to you so that you can remove the unnecessary files from your Mac completely.
12. Update Tracker
Update Tracker is an absolutely amazing utility which tells you about the latest versions of all applications installed on your Mac. When Update Tracker scans your computer, It marks up-to-date applications with Green color and outdated applications with Red Color. For outdated applications, It also shows the version installed on your computer and the version which is available now.
You can update individual applications as well as all the applications at once. You can also add applications to the favorite list so they get updated frequently. Some applications will get downloaded automatically while for some other applications, you might need to download and update them manually.
13. Login items
Login Items shows all the applications which launch with start-up of your Mac. The more applications launching upon the System Login makes your Mac slower. You can remove the unwanted start-up applications using this utility and make your Mac run pretty much faster as the number of background process running will be lesser.
You can also add an application to Login Items If you want to. Adding an application to Mac Startup is very straightforward and you can easily do that.
14. Default Apps
Default Apps module shows the associations between your files and particular applications which open those files. In this module, you can see the default applications for each file type and change them If necessary.
Sometimes when you install a new application, It changes the file associations automatically. For example, you view your Pictures with “Preview” regularly and after installing another photo editing application, that particular application is now opening your pictures. You now want to change this and this is what Default Apps is meant for. You can change the way how a file opens by default and you can choose any application for a particular file type.
15. Geek on Demand
Geek on Demand is an enhanced support service that gives MacKeeper and non-MacKeeper related answers to any technical questions. The service is free for licensed users of the software and you can ask for technical assistance for many topics. You can also use Live Chat feature built within Mackeeper to chat with 24/7 live operators to resolve your queries within a few minutes.
Frankly, getting good support is probably the most important thing I personally consider before buying a product or service and Mackeeper handles it very well. All the questions are answered instantly and I’m not sure what else can be best. This is the most fantastic support I’ve seen from a software company.
16. Find and Fix
Now with just a single button, MacKeeper will find and fix everything that is wrong with your mac. Gone are the days of having to run extensive individual pieces of software. This is true piece of mind with a single click. Simply click the “Start Scan” button on off you go with a faster, more secure mac!
Mackeeper is an extremely wonderful software and does lots of things for a very very small price. If you own a Mac, you must own Mackeeper, that’s what I can say about this software. Contrary to what I thought, this software doesn’t slow down Mac at all. It will run in background and you’ll hardly notice it. You can close it down if you want and everything is very flexible. I highly recommend Mackeeper for every Mac user.
Which cleaning software is best for you: CleanMyMac X orMacKeeper?
The answer, as always it depends. Some will be quite happywith one of the tools, and some will be even happier without any of them.
Let’s first compare what each software offers, and then wecan make a decision on which one is worth the money.
MacKeeper vs. CleanMyMac X: Feature Comparison
Cleaning
The primary function of both programs and the centralpromise is cleaning the Mac storage from the so-called junk. Both apps havesimilar classification what junk is:
- System Log Files
- System and User Caches
- Language Files
- Login Items
Besides everything above, both apps offer to remove Mail Attachments and empty Trash. Additionally, CleanMyMac keeps an eye on the Downloads folder because it’s often the largest folder containing unused disk images and various other downloadables.
Both programs offer control over which files to delete (if you are willing to go over thousands of items manually).
In my opinion, CleanMyMac is a little easier to use because it does a better breakdown. For instance, CleanMyMac breaks down Login Items in two sections: Optimization and Broken Login Items.
So, the user understands that Broken Login Items should go away in any case; they are not working anymore. And with the rest, you can control which ones to remove to speed up the startup time.
Furthermore, CleanMyMac displays Launch Agents separately from Login Items, unlike MacKeeper, which lumps everything together.
That being said, I am not sure that the average Mac user knows which files are safe to remove, and which are not. Also, I believe deleting cache and log files provides only a short time gain because those files will be recreated again and very quickly reach the same sizes.
Fortunately, macOS and most apps running on Macs do a good job keeping their files under control and do not let them fill up the disk space more than needed.
What’s the conclusion? While either program does acomparable job of storage cleaning, I am not convinced that most people willreally benefit from cleaning at all. And there is a chance that users can breaksomething by removing things that shouldn’t be.
Duplicates Finder
This function only exists in MacKeeper, and it absolutely useless. The thing with the latest version of macOS, duplicate files do not take additional space on the disk.
You can have ten copies of the same file, even renamed, and Mac will only store one file’s contents.
The function was useful before Apple made the APFS filesystem default in macOS High Sierra in 2017, but after that, it becameobsolete.
Uninstaller
One function that I like in both apps is Uninstaller. Uninstalling apps on Macs is very simple; just send them to Trash. However, the problem is that moving apps to Trash only deletes the application folder.
If the app creates additional files in other directories, and most apps do, those files will be left there forever. In most cases, they do not do any harm; they just stay there, taking valuable space.
Both MacKeeper and CleanMyMac offer a proper uninstallprocess for existing apps. They will make sure that all files will be removedproperly.
Both apps also allow us to deal with leftovers – files leftafter removing apps to Trash without using specialized software.
Again, CleanMyMac does the job a little better because theybreak down various apps into separate buckets: Unused, Leftovers, 32-bit. Theyalso show which apps came from the App Store and which were not.
Also, CleanMyMac allows you to set up a trigger so that whenyou remove the app the old way (move to Trash), it will pop up a message andask if you want to delete it properly.
How useful Uninstaller feature? For someone who downloads and plays with various apps or games, this feature is very handy. On the other hand, if you set up your Mac once and only use it to browse the Internet and work with Google docs, then you may not need it much.
By the way, there is a free tool AppCleaner that does an excellent job of uninstalling apps.
It may sharply differ from the full version of the program due to the license type. The software is periodically scanned by our antivirus system. You are downloading Trapcode Particular OFX for Nuke 32 bit, version 2.1.2.The package you are about to download is authentic and was not repacked or modified in any way by us. We also encourage you to check the files with your own antivirus before launching the installation. Trapcode particular free mac. Thank you for downloading Trapcode Particular OFX for Nuke 32 bit from our software libraryYou are about to download a trial version of the program.
Updater or Update Tracker
MacKeeper and CleanMyMac have a feature which tracks apps thatrequire updates. In most cases, those apps are the ones that you don’t usebecause the apps that were used regularly usually offer to upgrade onstart.
MacKeeper is clearly a winner in this category – itidentified nine apps that require updates vs. CleanMyMac’s two.
How useful is this feature? Well, it won’t hurt. I always suggest keeping software up to date to make sure that security patches were applied as soon as the vendors release them.
Performance and Maintenance
One feature that both apps offer in Performance orMaintenance modes is cleaning or freeing up memory. I have to say that macOS isthe most efficient operating system when it comes to memory management, and anyintervention into this can cause instability in your applications. If not doneright, you may use all unsaved work.
Generally, I would not recommend using any tools to free upmemory. There, however, exceptions when it may be used. For instance, if youhave memory-hungry apps, such as video editors or games, and the only way tofree up memory to unstuck the app is rebooting the Mac, then free up memoryfunction could be a solution.
But again, there is always a risk of instability, which mayrequire rebooting the computer. So use it at your own risk.
Besides memory clean up, CleanMyMac offers a plethora ofmaintenance tasks:
- Running maintenance scripts
- Speeding up the Mail app
- Reindexing Spotlight Search
- Flushing DNS cache
- Repairing disk permissions – never do this, this function is obsolete
How can an average Mac user know which ones to run and when? CleanMyMac provides usage recommendations for each task, and I found them good enough.
For instance, they suggest flushing DNS cache in case of an inability to connect to some web sites or when the Internet randomly gets slow.
MacKeeper does not have anything like that. On the otherhand, in most cases, most maintenance tasks are unnecessary.
Malware Removal
One of the reasons many users download MacKeeper is its Internet Security service.
How good is it? Since I don’t have a lab where I can test various antimalware solutions against 200+ virus samples (and most web sites that review antiviruses don’t have labs either), I have to rely on reputable organizations that specialize on testing antiviruses.
The two biggest names in this area are AV-Test and AV-Comparables. I was able to find only one mention of MacKeeper on AV-Test. Apparently, AV-Test tested MacKeeper in June 2017, and they found that MacKeeper was able to detect 85.9% of malware samples.
For the reference, the industry average is 97.5%. So AV-Test gave MacKeeper a score 0 (zero) out of 6 when it comes to malware detection.
CleanMyMac also offers the Malware Removal feature, but Iwas not able to find any independent study or test at all.
Conclusion: While MacKeeper’s malware detection is below the industry standard, at least it is proven to find some (not all) viruses. Anyway, I would not recommend using either program as a security option.

Features Unique To Cleanmymac
CleanMyMac and MacKeeper are not identical twins, so each ofthem has unique features.
The strength of CleanMyMac X is its cleaning story. TheFiles section contains Space Lens, Large and Old Files, and Shredder.
If you have a smaller disk (128GB or so) on your MacBook, start here.
Space Lens is a visual tool that allows instantly to know which folders taking the most space and zoom in to see their contents.
Large and Old files feature provides a different view with a focus on files. The feature allows us to quickly identify the files that taking up most space and see which unused files can be safely removed.
Both Space Lens and Large and Old Files features areexcellent tools that can help users to reduce the real junk on their diskssignificantly. I like this feature more than System Junk (which may not be safeto use sometimes).
Shredder is a nice tool for those who work with sensitive documents. As you probably know, even deleted documents can be recovered with the use of special tools. To avoid this from happening, you can delete files or folders with Shredder.
CleanMyMac menu is a service that runs on the background. You can access it from the Apple menu bar at the top of the screen. It contains a list of diagnostics tools such CPU, battery, RAM, and network usage and activity. It is also the easiest way to start the CleanMyMac X app or get access to the app Preferences. From here, you can set the Trash limit, after which the app will pop up a message asking if you want to clean Trash.
Features Unique To Mackeeper
MacKeeper’s features that are not available in CleanMyMac:Track My Mac, ID Theft Guard, Private Connect, and StopAd.
Track My Mac, as the name suggests, allows for tracking the Mac in case if it gets lost or stolen. But I am not sure why you would use it, because Apple does a great job tracking its devices for free (link).
StopAd is an ad-blocking extension for Safari and Chrome. I tested the Chrome one, and it works. However, I also have other free extensions that work even better.
Private Connect is a VPN service. I can’t comment on this one because it is not available in a trial version, and I didn’t want to purchase anything (I have a VPN already).
And finally, ID Theft Guard. When it comes to ID theft, I am very careful when choosing a company to perform the service. And frankly, I don’t trust MacKeeper enough to let them track my ID.
And while we are on the subject of trust, let’s see whichapp is safer.
Are Cleanmymac and Mackeeper Safe to Use?
I wrote two articles on this topic and performed extensiveresearch on the subject of safety:
In short, here is what I found.
CleanMyMac is a product of MacPaw, Ukrainian/Californiancompany. The company itself is legit. It was named among the best technologycompanies in Europe in 2019.
I also tested CleanMyMac with four antiviruses, and none ofthem detected it as malware.
On the other hand, MacKeeper’s reputation was tarnished atone point. The original developer of the product, ZeoBIT, agreed to pay $2million settlement in a class-action lawsuit over deceptive claims and falseadvertisement.
The current owner is German firm Kromtech, which was notaccused of any wrongdoing, as far as I know.
I tested MacKeeper with six antiviruses, and three of them, VIPRE Advanced Security, ESET Antivirus and Malwarebytes, identified MacKeeper as PUP – Potentially Unwanted Program and offered to delete MacKeeper from the disk.
Conclusion
In case if you think I am biased toward one program over the other, I have to disclose that I am an affiliate for both. I applied to affiliate programs before I even had a chance to review them, so here are my affiliate links (I would appreciate if you use them if you decide to make a purchase):
How Do I Download Mackeeper
And now, the conclusion:
Download Now Secure Download. The app comes in a 40 MB zip file and could take a bit longer to download. Once unzipped, TeXMaker for Mac weighs around 115MB. https://doomg.netlify.app/download-texmaker-45-mac.html.
New Mac Update Won't Download
Call me over-cautious, but I would never install anythingthat triggers an alarm in antimalware programs. And since two trusted antivirusprograms flagged MacKeeper, I personally going to stay away from it.
As for CleanMyMac, I like the app. At the same time, I don’tthink it’s good for everyone. Some people will find it helpful, and some willfind it absolutely useless.
